Pedro Álvaro Cateriano Bellido (born 26 June 1958) is a Peruvian lawyer and politician, who was Prime Minister of Peru from 2 April 2015 to 28 July 2016. He was previously the Minister of Defense from July 2012 to April 2015.
Career
Cateriano is a lawyer by profession and specialized in constitutional law.[1] From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the Peruvian parliament.[1] He served as deputy justice minister from 2001 to 2002.[1] He was named as the Organization of American States (OAS) election observer in Guatemala in 2007 and as the agent of Peru to the Inter-Human Rights (IACHR) in the Chavin case.[1] In addition, he teaches law at the University of Lima.[1]
He was appointed defense minister on 24 July 2012 to the cabinet led by Juan Jiménez.[2][3] Cateriano replaced Jose Urquizo Maggia in the post.[1]
Prime Minister
In April 2015 President Ollanta Humala appointed Cateriano as Prime Minister after his predecessor, Ana Jara was censured for spying against lawmakers, reporters, business leaders and other citizens.[4][5] As part of the presidential transition from Humala to Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, Cateriano resigned as Prime Minister on 28 July 2016.
